National Seminar on Media & Ideology of Development: Strategic options for Developing Regions

1st-2nd March, 2019

The concept of development is centuries old and it is the most debated and contested term in academic forums. The most pertinent question is how to develop and how to use different media vehicles and also which communication channel best suited for development. The need for development in twenty-first century especially in developing societies is of utmost importance because of its very connotative aspects. The new development paradigm demands social justice, liberation and empowerment as the hallmark of development. Organic and participatory model of development is encouraged to counter mechanistic model of development. Since Independence, we are vying for development, facing various development challenges in the form of social bottlenecks, illiteracy, abject poverty, unemployment, food crisis and shelter among others. Still people are ensnared by the stupefying bonds of traditionalism and to liberate them from the grip of underdevelopment, media’s role cannot be ignored. Media has the immense potential to play a catalytic role in development. But the role of mainstream media is debated upon because it is urban based and ignoring the larger section of the society in the rat race to achieve its corporate objectives. The politics of ignorance is structured; media corporatization and its concomitant issues are responsible for it. Moreover, newspapers and television channels are reluctant to cover the majority of the population what they are supposed to do and hence suffering from pluralistic ignorance.

The agricultural sector is ignored in their coverage, there is no such beat devoted to this sector which means seventy per cent of the population is not covered and hence neglected. In such a scenario, what development can we expect? What are the alternative paradigms for developmental challenges faced by these regions? Hence, the need to hold a national level seminar in this context has been felt and the proposed seminar will attempt to address these issues. The reasons for such feeling are obvious and justified.

The Central University of South Bihar established by an act of parliament is going to start its maiden voyage for the land of enlightenment, is committed to serve the soil. Bihar is a land of excellent human and huge natural resources but the state is suffering due to uneven distribution of resources. The present proposed seminar is to deliberate upon various development challenges due to flood affected and drought prone areas and other challenges due to cleanliness, open defecation and others in these reasons.
