Started Academic Session : On 1st September, 2009, with the PG Programme in Development Studies 

First Convocation held on 26th September, 2013 (Thursday) : The First Convocation was graced by Hon’ble Shri M. Hamid Ansari, Vice President of India as Chief Guest. Hon’ble Smt. Meira Kumar, Chancellor of the University and Speaker, Lok Sabha attended the convocation along with the Chief Minister of Bihar, Hon’ble Nitish Kumar; the Education Minister of Government of Bihar, Hon’ble Shri P. K. Shahi; and many other distinguished guests. A total of 156 graduates of the first three batches since the inception of CUB in 2009 were awarded the Degrees by the dignitaries.
The Central University of Bihar (CUB), is one amongst the 16 new Central Universities established by the Government of India under the Central Universities Act, 2009 (Section 25 of 2009). The first Vice-Chancellor Prof. Janak Pandey joined on 2nd March, 2009 and started functioning from a single room at Hindi Bhawan in Patna. Since then the University has made a steady progress in terms of academic achievements; the numbers of courses being taught; faculty; staff members; computer lab; media lab; science labs; and equipping the classrooms for e-learning.

The University began its academic activities with the MA Programme in Development Studies in 2009. Till date, the university has been able to offer four (4) Integrated undergraduate (UG) programmes, 25 postgraduate (PG) programmes and 22 Ph.D. programmes. The campus of the University is spread over about 300 acres of land located on Gaya-Panchanpur Road, about 15 kms away from Gaya Railway Station.

2009 – 10 : The University made its beginning by establishing the Centre for Development Studies under the School of Social Sciences and Policy, and launched its first PG Programme.

2010 – 11 : Five more PG Programmes in, viz., Biotechnology, Computer Science, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, and Statistics were launched.
2011 – 12 : Three more PG Programmes, viz., Bioinformatics, Communication and Media Studies, and Psychology were added.
2012 – 13 : Seven more PG Programmes started, viz., Life Science, Economics, English, Hindi, Political Science and International Relations, Sociology, and MTech in Computer Science.
2013 – 14 : Integrated BA. BEd; Integrated BSc. BEd; Integrated BA. LLB (Hons); Integrated BSc. LLB (Hons); and Integrated M.Phil-Ph.D. Programme in Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Development Studies, Economics, Environmental Science, Hindi, Life Science, Mathematics, Political Science & International Relations and Statistics were introduced. (Integrated MPhil – PhD was replaced with PhD programme w.e.f. Academic Year 2016-17)
2014 – 15 : B.Voc (Arts & Crafts) has been introduced under School of Vocational Studies from 2015-16 academic session (# the course was withdrawn w.e.f. from 2017-18 Academic session due to technical reasons).

2016 – 17 : The University introduced LLM programme under School of Law Governance from the Academic Year 2016-17. In addition, Ph.D. programmes in all Centres / Departments were introduced in accordance with the UGC (Minimum Standard and Procedure for Award of M.Phil / Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2016. Ph.D. programme was started in 16 departments /centres viz. (i) Biotechnology (ii) Life Science (iii) Environmental Science (iv) Mathematics (v) Statistics (vi) Communication and Media Studies (vii) Psychology (viii) Computer Science (ix) Hindi (x) English (xi) Sociology (xii) Development Studies (xiii) Economics (xiv) Political Science & International Relations (xv) Education and (xvi) Law and (xvii) Bioinformatics

2017 – 18 : M.Ed. programme was introduced by the University during the Academic Year 2017-18 under Department of Teacher Education.
2018 – 19 : From the Academic Session 2018-19, the University started five (5) new Postgraduate (PG) programmes in five subjects namely, Chemistry, Physics, Social Work, M.Com and History under Dept. of Chemistry, Physics, Sociological Studies, Commerce & Business Studies and Historical Studies & Archaeology respectively.
2019 – 20 : The University introduced Ph.D. programme during the academic year 2019-20 under Department of Chemistry, School of Physical and Chemical Sciences.

Schools

Smt. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, the former President of India in her capacity as the Visitor, in exercise of the powers vested in her under Section 27 (3) of the Act, 2009 accorded assent to the amendment to Statute 15 of the University (vide letter no. F. 42 – 26/2009-Desk (U) dated 28th July 2010, and approved 14 schools and entered in the Statutes:

Milestones

Bhoomi Pujan of the Campus Land on 27th February, 2014 (Thursday) : The University Chancellor and Lok Sabha Speaker, Hon’ble Smt. Meira Kumar laid down the foundation stone at the 300-acre campus-site amidst great enthusiasm and fervour in Panchanpur, in the district of Gaya in Bihar. Hon’ble Shri P. K. Shahi, Education Minister of Bihar was present as distinguished guest on the occasion along with Shri Sushil Kumar Singh, Member of Parliament, Aurangabad; Shri Hari Manjhi, Member of Parliament, Gaya; and, Dr. Anil Kumar, Member of the Legislative Assembly Tikari. Prof. Janak Pandey, Vice-Chancellor was present on the occasion along with the other members of the Executive Council, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Debdas Banerjee, Registrar Prof. Mohammad Nehal, faculty, officers, staff and students. A large number of people from the neighbouring areas and other parts of Bihar gathered at the CUB’s upcoming campus to witness the grand celebration.
CUBET (Central University of Bihar Entrance Test) 2014 : For the first time the University successfully conducted the online entrance test CUBET (Central University of Bihar Entrance Test) on May 30 & 31, 2014. The entrance test was held for admission to undergraduate, postgraduate and Integrated MPhil-PhD programmes offered by the university for academic session 2014-15. A total of 2127 candidates appeared in the online test conducted at 15 different centres across the country including Bihar and other states
Foundation Laying of Buildings on 31st August, 2015 : Union HRD minister Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani laid down the foundation stone at the 300-acre campus-site in presence of CUSB Vice-Chancellor Prof. Harish Chandra Singh Rathore and entire university fraternity. The minister was accompanied by people from politicians namely, Ram Kumar Sharma, Member of Parliament, MLC Krishna Kumar Singh, Dr. Anil Kumar, Member of Legislative Assembly from Tikari (Gaya), Vinay Sheel Oberoi, Secretary, Dept of Higher Education among many others on the dais. The Union minister laid the foundation of seven buildings of CUSB under first Phase, namely, Central Office, Schools of Earth, Biological & Environmental Sciences, School of Social Sciences & Policy, Boys Hostel, Girls Hostel, Lecture complex and dining hall.
Accreditation from AICTE : The University received the recognition from AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) to offer the ongoing M.Tech in Computer Science programme in 2015.
Accreditation from NCTE : The University got the recognition from NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) for the ongoing four-year integrated BA B.Ed & BSc B.Ed programmes in 2015.
Accreditation from BCI : The Bar Council of India (BCI) recognised the ongoing five-year Integrated BA LLB (Hons) & BSc LLB (Hons) programmes offered by the University in 2015.
Grade ‘A’ NAAC Accreditation : CUSB was accredited with ‘A’ grade by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) in its first attempt itself on 25th May, 2016.
2nd Vice-Chancellor of CUSB – 05th August 2015 : Prof. H.C.S. Rathore Assumed Charge as 2nd Vice-Chancellor of CUSB. Prof. Rathore has a very vast and impressive academic as well as administrative experience. Before joining CUSB, Prof Rathore was the Dean of Faculty of Education at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. He was also the co-ordinator of Internal Quality Assurance Cell of BHU. He has received many fellowships for his praiseworthy contribution to the field of Education. Prof. Rathore has received many awards and recognitions for his work. DAAD, Humbolt Fellowship, etc. are among the renowned fellowships received by Prof. Rathore. Prof. Rathore is also having good administrative experience. He had been the Chief Proctor of BHU for the period of about six years, which is the longest for any Proctor in the University. A senior professor, Prof. Rathore is member of several national committees constituted by MHRD, UGC, NAAC and NCTE. In addition to these, he is having membership of more than a dozen professional national and international bodies.
94th Rank in NIRF Ranking – 2016 : In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking, CUSB was listed among top 100 Universities of India, which was declared by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India on 4th April, 2016. By securing the 94th position, CUSB became the only University in Bihar to find a place in NIRF Ranking and also remained at top position among the Universities in the state.
Functioning of University from Permanent Campus at Panchanpur, Gaya in July 2017 : The Administrative work of the University started functioning from its permanent campus at Panchanpur, Gaya.
Commencement of Academic Activities at Permanent Campus in July 2018 : From the Session 2018-19 the Academic activities started at the University campus and the temporary campuses at Patna and Gaya closed down.
25th Rank in India Today Ranking in 2018 : The University secured 25th position among India’s Best Government Universities in the ranking carried out by India Today Group. The list was published in June 4, 2018 edition of India Today magazine.
22nd Rank in India Today Ranking in 2019 : The University secured 22nd position among the India’s Best Government Universities in the ranking carried out by India Today Group. The list was published in July 2019 edition of India Today magazine.

CUSB Ranked 1st in Bihar among Government Universities in Education World Ranking in 2020 : Central University of the state of Bihar secured 1st Rank (position) among the government funded Universities in Education World India Ranking carried out in May 2020. In the list of India’s 150 Top government universities, Indian Institute of Science (IIS) Bangalore has been declared the Best (No. 1) University of the country, while CUSB is given 56th Rank. Ironically, CUSB is also the Best University (No. 1) among the 16 new Central Universities established under the Act of 2009. The ranking had a total score of 1300 featuring the criteria namely, Competence of faculty, Faculty welfare & development, Research and innovation, Curriculum & pedagogy, Industry interface, Placement, Infrastructure and facilities, Internationalism, Leadership / governance quality and Range / diversity of programmes offered.
