The Department of Mass Communication and Media (DMCM) has been established with an aim to promote quality media education in the field of Mass Communication in India. It believes in fabricating effective communicator in the field of print, electronic, online, films, advertising, public relations and event management etc. During the last couple of decades the Media industry in the country has grown by leaps and bounds and the DMCM is committed to produce trained media professionals and good academician to meet the national and international standard.

DMCM offers the best facilities through its experienced faculty members to make it the most sought Department in the field of media and communication studies.

The Department offers MA programme and Doctoral Degrees in congruence with the New Education Policy (NEP), 2020. It also prides itself by offering not only Ph.D. degrees but also Post-doctoral degrees to the budding scholars who want to conduct research that cater to both humanistic and social science methods.

Board of Studies (BoS)

BoS is a statutory body for each department/centre, primarily responsible for syllabus design and regular update. As described in the Ordinance section 25.10,

The functions of the Board of Studies shall be:-

  • To recommend to the School Board, courses of studies offered by the Department/Centre and continue updating syllabus;
  • To take all steps in accordance with the provisions of the Regulations about teaching and evaluation of various courses/programmes of the Department/Centre;
  • To recommend to the School Board measures for the improvement of teaching and research in the Department/Centre;
  • To constitute panels of experts to be considered for appointment as Examiners, Board of Examiners for various courses/academic programmes and M.Phil./Ph.D. thesis representing various specializations of Departments/Centres; and
  • To perform such other functions as may be assigned to it by the School Board, the Academic Council, the Executive Council and the Vice-Chancellor.

Department Committee (DC)

As enshrined in the Ordinace-26, the Department/Centre Committee (DC/CC) shall consist of the Head of the Department/Centre, as Chairperson ex-officio, and all faculty members of the Department/Centre.

26.2 The Department/Centre Committee shall have the following functions, namely–

  • To make proposals to the Board of Studies on academic programmes concerning teaching and research, and the creation, specialization and abolition of teaching posts;
  • To propose schemes for the maintenance and improvement of the standards of various programmes of study and research of the Department/Centre;
  • To apportion the teaching and co-curricular work of the Department/Centre among the teachers thereof and monitor the proper execution thereof;
  • To consider and decide on the assignment and utilisation of the space, equipment and other assets of the Department/Centre and other matters of general and academic interest of the Department/Centre;
  • To consider and recommend perspectives and major thrust areas for research and to propose research projects to be taken up by the members of the Department/Centre, individually/collectively;
  • To review and apprise the SRC/URC with the current status of research in Department/Centre;
  • To suggest to SRC/URC norms related to qualifications and research experience of a faculty to be recognized as a research degree supervisor and to constitute Department/Centre Research Degree Committee (DRC/CRC);
  • To suggest to University Admission, Teaching and Evaluation Committee (UATEC) on any issue related to admission, teaching, continuous evaluation in courses and students’ assessment of courses, offered by the Department/Centre to improve quality of education.
  • To constitute such Committee(s) comprising members of the Department/Centre, and if necessary external experts, for framing and implementation of rules and regulations related to admission, teaching, continuous evaluation, maintenance of students’ records including alumni affairs as well as promotion of research and development; and
  • To perform such other functions as may be assigned by the Ordinances or Regulations, or by the Vice- Chancellor/Dean/School Board from time to time.

Department Research Degree Committee (DRDC)

Departmental/Centre Research Degree Committee (DRDC/CRDC) deal with all matters connected with the Ph.D. Programme of the Department and report the matter to the University Research Degree Committee (URDC), as per University Ordinance-33. It consists of the Head of Department/Centre as Chairman and other faculties in the department.

Functions of DRDC/CRDC are as follows:

  • Allotment of Supervisor, Co-Supervisor, recording reasons for not admitting a candidate.
  • Recommendation for extension of time for submission of thesis
  • Recommendation to peruse a part of research outside the University
  • Approval of the Course Work
  • Assessment and Grading in Course Work
  • Monitoring the research progress of the candidate
  • Approval of Research plan proposal/language
  • Sanction of duty leave to the Ph.D. candidate
  • Assessment of Ph.D. work through pre-submission seminar
  • Maintaining the record of research paper publications of the candidate
  • 11 Recommendation of panel of experts for thesis evaluation
  • Assessment of revised thesis for satisfactory compliance, if any
  • Arrangement of Viva-voce in the absence of the supervisor
  • Recommendation to waive the Viva-voce

Research Advisory Committee (RAC)

A Research Advisory Committee (RAC) is constituted for every research scholar admitted in PhD programme. The Committee would guide the research scholar to develop the study design and methodology of research and to To periodically review and assist in the progress of the research work of the research scholar. The committee shall have also have power to recommend the co-supervisor and cancellation of registration

Mission:

To create a dynamic learning and working environment which nurtures new ideas, creativity, research and scholarship and develops leaders and innovators in the domain of media and mass communication.

  • Objectives of the Program:
  • The ever converging world of Mass Media has fuelled the need for multi-tasking and multi-talented media professionals. While CUSB always aims at high academic standards, The extra-curricular activities and innovative research, seminars, etc. Department of Mass communication and Media enable the students to develop hands-on-pre-requisite skills, interact with industry experts and exchange ideas with students from other institutes and backgrounds. All this all together at DMCM makes an amalgamation of brilliant ideas, top class academic standards and best in class facilities. Department of mass Communication and Media is accustomed to experiment with various innovative academic activities to enhance the media understanding among students.

  • Program Outcomes:
  • Program will develop the understanding of Journalism responsibility and how to report for serve the society. The concept of communication process and theories will provide the vital learning and understanding of the problems for better solution. Media course is also attached with technical knowledge, the essential and professional software, tools, equipment, production and others many skills will help to become a trained students for media industries. Newspaper/Magazine Designing, Film Production, Radio programmes, Photography, Video Editing, Camera Operation, Audio Mixer, Video Switcher, Graphics Designing, Website Designing, Anchoring and more others skill based understanding will be developed for media students.

  • Eligibility:
  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a minimum of 55% marks for General/OBC candidates and 50% marks for SC/ST candidates.

    • Objectives of the Program:
    • Media Research provides an overview of the concepts, methods, and tools by which communication research is designed, conducted interpreted and critical evaluation. The primary goal of this course are to help you become a knowledgeable consumer and a limited producer of communication research as you develop skill in gathering, organising, interpreting and presenting research information. The major thrust of the curriculum is to impart theoretical and practical knowledge of various aspects of media. The course is designed in such a way that it gives students an overall understanding of Media with specialization in electronic journalism, electronic media production, online journalism and Print media.

    • Program Outcomes:
    • The program will develop understanding among scholars to different research methods and familiar them with various data collection tools. It will enhance the data analysis and preparation of research report and thesis writing ability in researcher. Comprehend the relationship between theory and research methods in study of communication as a social science.

    • M.A.in Media stream with 55% Marks.

    Department of Mass Communication and Media has two Labs, namely Media Studio and Print Production Computer Lab.

     

    Print Production Computer Lab

    The computer lab comprises fourteen computers loaded with Quark Express, Adobe Master Collection CS 5.5, which consists of Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Adobe Premiere and Adobe Audition.

    Nikon Z6 II Mirrorless Camera, Handy video cameras, digital still cameras, and film screening provision in HD are also available in the lab. A LED television with a digital connection to give practical inputs regarding the latest trends in electronic media. And learn from live practical sessions from television, like debate, anchoring, panel discussion etc. Sony Music system is also available for Computer lab for smooth organize department level programme. 

     

    Media Studio

    The department has a soundproof electronic media production lab equipped with 4K professional video cameras (Sony), Audio console, Video mixer, Talkback, Virtual chroma set, Real set and Apple Mac-Pro editing suite with the necessary software. Studio setup is providing three multi-camera layouts with a Teleprompter. The studio also has an Audio delay unit, Video Switcher, Live streaming device, and five well-equipped editing and graphics edit bay.
