Mr. Aditya Mohanty has a diverse academic training and aspires to be a leading public intellectual specialising in the cultural politics of development. With an undergraduate training (B.A) in Sociology (Honors) and Geography from 2000-03 at Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, India, Aditya pursued a postgraduate (MA) in Sociology at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India from 2003-05. He then worked for four years (2005-09) in the different grassroots level Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in diverse verticals like the Disabilities sector, Primary Education, Local Urban Governance, and Micro Finance. Thereafter, he spent a couple of years (2009-11) at IIT Kanpur on a research project dealing with local urban governance in Delhi and was trained in Urban Geography as a Visiting Commonwealth Scholar from 2011-12 at University College London (UCL), UK. Since 2012, he has been working as an Assistant Professor of Development Studies at the Central University of South Bihar, Gaya.
In the meantime, he was also on a 3-year (2016-19) Doctoral Fellowship to pursue an exciting and unique interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Citizenship, Civil Society and Rule of Law at the University of Aberdeen, UK. His Ph.D. research project used visual methods and ethnographic tools to understand as to how in Dalit colonies of Delhi, the setting up of Resident Welfare Associations engendered new inter-weavings of economic precarity and cultural marginality among subaltern groups. His research interests fall into four broad areas, viz., a) Postcolonial Futures, b) Comparative Urbanism, c) Participatory Governance and d) Development Management, on which he has delivered talks and presented papers in over two dozen universities in India, the UK, the USA, and Europe. He has also published in reputed journals including the Economic and Political Weekly, Space & Polity, Sociology, and Regional Studies.
