Prof. Prafull Kumar Singh
Professor & Head
Specialization: Hydrogeology, Geologic Remote Sensing, Natural Hazards
Qualification : Ph.D ( Hydrogeology, Jiwaji University , Gwalior)
Experience : Prof. Prafull Singh possesses over 17 years of post-Ph.D. experience in teaching and research, with expertise in Groundwater resources, geohazards, and remote sensing applications in geosciences. He currently serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Geology at the Central University of South Bihar, a NAAC A++ Grade University in India. Prof. Singh has received numerous accolades, including the DST Young Scientist Award, a European Union Fellowship, and the Shikshak Samman Samaroh Award Certificate. He was also honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Earth Sciences and Geospatial Technology by the Hon’ble Governor of Bihar, organized by IERARD. With over 70 research papers published in high-impact, SCI/SCOPUS-indexed International Journals, Prof. Singh has congregated more than 3,700 citations and holds an H-index of 31. He has also edited three books with International publishers. An active member of the academic and research community, Prof. Singh serves as Associate Editor for an International journal and is on the editorial board and review panels of several prominent journals in earth sciences, environmental studies, and hydrology. He also reviews research proposals for major Indian funding bodies such as DST, SERB, and UGC, and contributes to academic governance through involvement in Research Degrees Committees, Boards of Studies, and Academic Councils. His research has made significant advances in groundwater science, particularly in identifying recharge and potential zones, aiding sustainable water management. His work has contributed to national missions like the Atal Bhujal Yojana, Namami Gange Program, National Hydrology Project, and the National Aquifer Mapping Program (NAQUIM). Beyond academia, Prof. Singh plays a key role in community-based water resource management, focusing on nature-based solutions for groundwater sustainability in the Falgu River Basin of South Bihar. He is actively involved in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and serves as the Nodal Officer for the Indian Universities and Institutions Network for DRR (IUIN-DDR). His research in landslide susceptibility mapping in the Himalayas uses AI and machine learning to improve prediction and risk mitigation. Additionally, his studies on climate change and human health have provided valuable insights into the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect in major cities, linking urbanization and anthropogenic changes to public health consequences.
