Under the leadership of the Honorable Vice Chancellor of Central University of South Bihar (CUSB), Prof. Kameshwar Nath Singh, the Pro Bono Club functioning under School of Law & Governance (SLG) organized a regional seminar on “Indian Capital Market: Emerging Opportunities and Challenges for Legal Professionals” on January 30, 2025, in collaboration with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The seminar was led by Prof. Dr. Ashok Kumar, Head of the School of Law and Governance, Prof. Dr. S.P. Srivastava, Dean of the School of Law and Governance, and Dr. Deo Narayan Singh, Nodal Officer, Pro Bono Club and Organizing Secretary.
The event began with a welcome address and introduction of the speakers by Prof. Dr. Ashok Kumar. He highlighted the purpose of the seminar, which was to familiarize students and legal professionals with the current status of the Indian capital market, its opportunities, and the challenges associated with it. Prof. Dr. S.P. Srivastava also shared valuable insights on the Indian economy and its connection to the stock market, explaining how the Indian economy has strengthened over the past few decades and how the capital market has played a crucial role in this growth.
The keynote speaker, Joy Agarwal (Assistant General Manager, SEBI), joined the event online and gave a detailed presentation on the development of the Indian capital market, its regulatory framework, and legal aspects. He emphasized that the capital market is a vital part of India’s economy and requires a strong regulatory system for its effective functioning. He also discussed various reforms introduced by SEBI to maintain market transparency and protect investor interests. He pointed out that innovations and the growing startup culture have led to a surge in the IPO market. Understanding the regulatory framework is essential for legal professionals to assist investors, companies, and regulatory bodies. His lecture was highly informative for students and participants, emphasizing the interrelationship between the economy and the capital market.
In the technical session of the seminar, Advocate Supriyo Chatterjee (Deputy Manager - Regulatory, National Stock Exchange) gave a talk on “Investment in the Capital Market.” He discussed how the Indian capital market offers numerous opportunities for investors but also carries risks. He elaborated on the stock market, bond market, mutual funds, and other financial instruments. The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Deo Narayan Singh (Nodal Officer, Pro Bono Club & Organizing Secretary). He stressed the importance of understanding the economy, market, stock exchanges, and SEBI’s investment regulations. All these economic tools are crucial for the economic stability and growth of any country. He also emphasized that understanding the capital market, appropriate investment strategies, and the legal framework is essential to protect the interests of investors and the industry.
