Under the leadership of CUSB Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kameshwar Nath Singh, a special lecture was organized by Research and Development Cell (RDC) of the Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) on the topic of “Intellectual Property and Its Commercialization” delivered by the Chief Guest, Dr. Amaresh Panda, RTTP, Lead -RTTO, KIIT-TBI, Bhubaneswar. For this program, Honourable Vice Chancellor has nominated Prof. Amiya Priyam, Dean, School of Physical Sciences, CUSB, on his behalf to present in the programme.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Durg Vijai Singh, Director, RDC, CUSB, who highlighted the significance of the Lecture and welcomed the Dignitaries, faculties, and Students. This was followed by an address from Prof.  Rakesh Kumar, Co-Convenor of the Program, who welcomed and introduced the Chief Guest of the program, Dr. Amaresh Panda.

Dr. Amaresh Panda, RTTP, Lead -RTTO, KIIT-TBI, Bhubaneswar, illuminated the need for intellectual property commercialization in his insightful lecture. He introduced Intellectual Property (IP) and its eight different types, which include Patents, Trademarks, Industrial Designs, Plant varieties, Copyrights, Geographical Indications, Layout Design of Integrated Circuits, and Confidential Information. He emphasized the importance of having IP over our academic and research works. He explained and illustrated what kind of ideas, discoveries, and research can be patented, under what IP types, and what kind of work doesn’t fall under patentability criteria. He also explained the patent cycle from scratch to patent and commercialization, the difference between patent literature and non-patent literature, and how to find and read patent literature from different databases and sources, such as the Indian Patent Search Page (INPASS), the WIPO Patent Search Page, the USPTO Patent Search Page, the EPO Patent Search Page, and the Google Patent Search Page. He further detailed the Patent registration process in India, explaining the criteria, time duration, and Cost needed for patent filing, patent examination, and finally, patent grant. He also showcased the path for filing patents outside India for a global approach, explaining the Paris Convention/PCT approach for filing outside India. While explaining the patent documentation process, the expert explained that the documentation for filing the patent in India, as well as at the global level, starts with the Title and Field of Invention and ends with the Claim and drawing. He clarified that a Patent can have one or more claims, and similarly, each claim can be filled under individual patents. Talking about the types of claims, he explained product claims, process claims, and product-by-process claims. He also enlightened about the strategy for the claim so that the patent gets more chances of acceptance. At the end of his presentation, he highlighted the Patent filed by the CUSB fraternity in recent years; he encouraged the students, scholars, and faculty members to have at least one patent filed. He showcased how innovation changes our world through Technology Transfer and gave the example of various leading global universities and startups collaborating. Finally, he discussed the innovative programs for technology development run by the Indian Government, such as SIIP, MSME, DST, NIDHI, CRS ANGELS, etc., and the funds provided by them for innovation at universities.


In the presidential address, Prof. Amiya Priyam, Dean of the School of Physical Sciences, explained the journey of IP at CUSB, Gaya. He emphasized that India is steadily growing in the field of IP filling and will surely become one of the leading countries in IP grants in the upcoming years. He commended the organizing committee for the successful organization of the lecture and applauded the participants for their interactive participation.


The formal proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Prabhat Ranjan, Head, Department of Computer Science, who acknowledged the need for IP in academia and encouraged the participants to incorporate the points highlighted by the Chief Guest. Finally, He acknowledged the contributions of everyone involved and looked forward to more collaborative and fruitful events in the future.
