The Department of Life Science at the Central University of South Bihar organized a convocation lecture on the topic “Use of Drosophila Flies in Teaching and Research”. Prof. Arvind Kumar Singh, an eminent Professor from the Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), shed light on the potential use of Drosophila in class teaching, population genetics and evolutionary studies. Prof. Singh gave a comprehensive lecture covering various aspects of Drosophila, highlighting its present use in modern biological research like the unravelling the complexities of neurological disease like Parkinson as well as in evolutionary biology, thus emphasizing the hassle free and diverse use of these flies in class studies and research.
This convocation lecture series is an initiative of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Kameshwar Nath Singh which is being organised by different Departments in the university. In his presidential address, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Kameshwar Nath Singh briefed us about the development of this new convocation lecture series. He remarked that organizing this kind of out of the box event would enrich and help to keep up the students, young researchers, and faculties with the current trends in biology across India which is a mandate of the NEP 2020. He emphasized that scientific interactive sessions would boost young minds as well.
The event began with welcome address and introduction of the invited speaker by Prof. Ram Pratap Singh, Head, Department of Life Science followed by Dean’s remark by Prof. Rizwanul Haque, Dean of School of Earth, Biological and Environmental Sciences. Faculty members, students and research scholars of Life Science, Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Geography Education and various others department attended the lecture. The coordinator of the event Dr. Sanjay Kumar delivered vote of thanks. Over 150 students and teachers of the university attended the lecture.
