National Seminar on Media Discourse on National Security and Perspectives on Social Concerns
As the fourth pillar of democracy, the role of mainstream media is important in ensuring national security. In fact, it is the right time for Media to actively play its role as the pillar of democracy and ensure dissemination of information in truthful way to the society and contribute for national security. The critical issue of national security was discussed at length-and-breadth by the experts in the inaugural session of two-day national seminar organised at Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) on Thursday (March 05, 2020).
The Dept. of Mass Communication and Dept. of Sociological Studies of the University jointly organised two-day National Seminar on “Media Discourse on National Security and Perspectives on Social Concerns.” The chief guest for the event was the Former Editor-in-chief and Eminent Journalist, Mr. Satish K. Singh and the key note speaker was Prof. Dr. C.P. Singh, Professor at Indraprastha University. The aim of the seminar was to deliberate upon the topic “Media Discourse on National Security and Perspectives on Social Concerns.”. The purpose to hold this National Seminar is to make an attempt to address attention needed social issues in the developing societies of 21st century and towards the internal and external security of the nation.
CUSB VC Prof. H.C.S. Rathore in his address said that media plays a vital role when national security and social issues are concerned. It is the strongest weapon to impact and affect the mind of the people. He also said that media should work on making nation first, India first. Everyone should come together for nation building.
The chief guest, Mr. Satish K. Singh sermonized that security is integral and wholesome approach, it is not just about arms and weapons. Security can be achieved when there would be freedom of asking questions and freedom of expressing thought and feelings. He further said that news media should work according to it’s ethics, it should be objective, fair, factual and balanced. He said that we should focus on integration and dissemination not on assimilation and restrictions. He also added that if we want real security and social equilibrium, we should create an atmosphere of cohesion, integration and peace of mind.
Later on, Prof. Dr. C.P. Singh orated that India has not resolved security problems from last 2000year as we are inclusive in nature, when India was rich it was invaded and ruled and when it became poor it got freedom. He further said that global jihad and global nationalism results global civil war and there is war of concepts. He asked many questions in his speech like how can people ask good content from media when they don’t want to pay Rs. 5-6 for newspaper and also talked about offensive defence. He concluded his speech by saying that we have to move from age of ideology to basket of perspectives, from narrative laid data gathering to data laid narrative gathering and from mass communication to massive interactive communication.
The program started with Kulgeet performed by the students of CUSB. Later on, the guests on the dais were felicitated with mementoes. The first day event started with lighting of the lamp by CUSB Vice-Chancellor Prof. H.C.S. Rathore and guests. In his welcome address, Dr. Atish Prashar welcomed the guests and thanked them for gracing the seminar. He said that media is not just a tool for disseminating information but it plays vital role in integration and security of the nation. New media has also great responsibility as far as national security is concerned. He further added that media, nationalism and security are under constant scrutiny and media should be vigilant and aware society.
The vote of Thanks was delivered by the Head of the Department of Sociological Studies, Dr. Anil Kumar Singh Jha and at the end of the inaugural ceremony National Anthem was played. The event was anchored by Bhwya Sriya and Srishti Arvind.
Second Day:
On second and last day of the seminar, three technical sessions, one plenary session and Valedictory session were held. The three technical sessions were chaired by Prof. V.K Lal, Ex HOD, Patna University, Prof.Dipak Kumar, the Head of The Department of Sociology, Magadh University and Dr.Raghvendra Mishra, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University,Amarkantak. The sessions were based on the theme of Internet and security, Media and social Issues Awareness and on Society,Culture and Environment.
The plenary session were adjudged by Mr. Mayank Singh, Joint Registrar, BHU and Dr. Rajesh Jha , Delhi University. In the plenary session Mr. Mayank Singh emphasized on the role of media in promoting terrorism and hampering national security.He further added that media is like oxygen to terrorism and every act filmed and broadcast is as good as a missile fired at the enemy.
Dr. Rajesh Jha in his oration said that national security should be looked upon with grassroot level perspectives and not only with protecting and securing boundary .He also said that social media is growing as traditional media is getting too much regulated and media should play its role in creating legitimacy of the nation.
Afterwards in Valedictory session, Prof.Atish Prashar welcomed the guests, Prof. A.K. Kaul, Professor Emeritus, BHU and Mr. Rajesh Kumar, DIG and felicitated them.
The summary report of seminar was presented by Dr.Sujit Kumar, Assistant Professor, CUSB. The Valedictory address was done Prof. A.K. Kaul and the Presidential address was given by Mr.Rajesh Kumar.
Other dignitaries present were Dr. Ravi Suryavanshi,Dr.Anindya Deb,Dr.Kinshuk Pathak,Dr.Sanat Kumar Sharma,Dr. Parijat Pradhan , Dr. Priyaranjan, Dr.Jitendra Ram etc.
