M.Sc. Geology students explore Gaya and adjoining areas on One week Geological field Work
The Department of Geology of Central University of South Bihar, Gaya has conducted one week Geological field Work with M.Sc. Geology students in and around Gaya, Jahanabad, Nalanda and Rajgir areas from 2nd November to 8th November, 2023. The field work was coordinated and guided by Dr. K. Milankumar Sharma, Associate Professor and Dr. Priti Rai, Assistant Professor of the Department. During the field work, the students of the department were exposed to the geological setting of the region and certain techniques of geological data collection in the field, identification of rocks, primary and secondary structure, regional structure, basic fundamentals of geological mapping were practically taught. The theoretical and conception knowledges learned from classes were applied for understanding the geological processes of the region.
Students learned the techniques of geological mapping at the well observable quartzites and phyllites sequence of the Rajgir Group of rocks which are exposed along the Gaya – Rajgir road section. The exposure of granitoids, banded iron formation, chert, phyllite and quartzite with basalt, etc. at Bathani village were well studied. Certain places of geological significances, archaeological and cultural sites of national and international importance were also visited. The geological and cultural significance of Barabar caves which is a part of National geoheritage site and economic significance of the anorthosite, gabbro with magnetite ore mineralization at the Barabar, Sapaneri hills were also revisited. It is also observed that the region is bestowed with rich geodiversity of great significance and some of them are needed to be protected for the interest of our future generation.
Geological field excursion is one the important activity for the students and researchers to understand rocks in their natural environment and their relationship to landscape development. It’s always help to understand the geology and mapping techniques in the field itself and connect the class learning with field exposures. Prof. Prafull Singh, Head, Geology and other faculty members, Dr. Vikal Kumar Singh, Dr. Dhirendra Kumar congratulated to the Coordinators and students for successfully conduction of one week geological field work activity.
