Software Freedom Day celebrated by Dept. of Computer Science of CUSB
To promote awareness about open source software Software Freedom Day was organized on 22 September 2023 by the Department of Computer Science, Central University of South Bihar, under the leadership of Dr. Prabhat Ranjan, Head of the Department. The event was organized in the presence of Professor Dr. Prabhat Ranjan, Associate Professor Dr. Jainath Yadav, Assistant Professor Dr. Nemi Chandra Rathore, Assistant Professor Dr. Piyush Kumar Singh and all the researchers and students of the department.
It is known that open source or open source software is called software whose source code is open to everyone. The code of open source software is made available free of cost and any person can change, modify or contribute to its development or can use it for free in his own work. Globally, Software Freedom Day is celebrated every year on the third Saturday of September to create awareness among the public about open source software.
Addressing the program, Head of the Department, Dr. Prabhat Ranjan said that Software Freedom is related to the independent use, study, distribution and modification of software. Associate Professor Dr. Jainath Yadav said that such programs should be promoted to make the public aware about open source software. Dr. Nemi Chandra Rathore, while explaining the concept of Software Freedom Day, said that there are many organizations around the world that create and distribute open source software. He also inspired the students to join such organizations in future and make people aware about it. Dr. Piyush Kumar Singh, in his address to the students, said that knowledge increases when shared, hence I hope that you will also develop open source software and make your invaluable contribution to the prosperity of the country.
On this occasion, various competitions like quiz competition, coding competition, poster presentation competition, distro exhibition competition were organized by the department. On October 3, 2023, the winners of the competitions were awarded by the honorable professors of the department and certificates were given to all the participants. Algoristan Research, Gurugram, provided Certificates to all the winners and participants of the program.
